Markus Nass (German, b.1979)
Markus Nass, a recent graduate from the Staatliche Akademie der Bildendende Künste Karlsruhe, has developed a highly individual painterly style. Choosing to work with synthetic materials, Nass adds pigment to epoxy resin, which he then pours onto an acrylic surface. The clear, jewel-like colours are carefully chosen for the ways in which, combined and intermingled, they produce harmonies and dissonances, surface and depth, light and dark. Nass plans a basic structure for each work at the beginning of the production process but a central aspect of his approach is to allow the different colours to flow together, creating myriad layers. The resulting forms suggest birds-eye views of landscapes, cell structures or underwater realms. However, the transparent glow and otherworldly character of Nass' work ensures that the intimations of reality are always balanced with purely abstract elements. Ultimately, Nass' work is a self-reflective investigation of colour, light and form, the very fundamentals of art.
